Setting up printing on a Windows XP system in the Math Department

The Canon Color Copy machine in the machine room can used as a printer. This requires a special Microsoft Windows software driver. See the Note 3 toward the end of this document.
All other printers are configured as UNIX printers.

To print to a remote UNIX printer configured with Line Printer Daemon (LPD), you must first configure Windows XP to print with Line Printer (LPR). Do this by installing Print Services for UNIX and installing and configuring a print driver to print with LPR as the printer port.
To print to a remote UNIX printer configured with Line Printer Daemon (LPD), you must first configure Windows XP to print to a LPR (unix line printer) port. Details on how to do this follow.

If you are setting up the COLOR1 printer (XEROX 860DP) you must first install the needed driver by downloading it from http://www.xerox.com Navigate to the drivers & downloads page and select the appropriate driver. Follow instructions provided on the web site to install the XEROX 860DP driver. Alternately, if you are on campus or connected via VPN you can download the driver from http://math.ucdenver.edu/downloads/860enw2kps.exe

If you are setting up the HPBW printer (HP LaserJet P4515X) you must first install the needed driver by downloading it from http://www.hp.com Navigate to the drivers & downloads page and select the appropriate driver. Follow instructions provided on the web site to install the HP Universal Print Driver for Windows. Alternately, if you are on campus or connected via VPN you can download the driver from http://math.ucdenver.edu/downloads/upd-5_1_1_8232-ps_win-xp-vista.exe or http://math.ucdenver.edu/downloads/upd-5_1_1_8232-pcl6_win-xp-vista.exe (eather should work, the pcl6 driver is propriatary to HP but may support more print features)

If you are setting up the COLOR3 printer (XEROX Phaser 6360DN) you must first install the needed driver by downloading it from http://www.xerox.com navigate to the drivers & downloads page and select the appropriate driver. Follow instructions provided on the web site to install the Xerox Phaser 6360 driver. Alternately, if you are on campus or connected via VPN you can download the driver from http://math.ucdenver.edu/downloads/6360WinXP03V_PS_English.exe

After downloading one of these exe driver files extract its contents by running it.

Other printer drivers are included with windows XP, so no driver downloading is required.

Next:
To add an LPR port

1. In Control Panel, double-click the Printers icon.
2. Double-click Add Printer, and then click Next.
3. Click Local printer, clear the Automatically detect my printer
check box, and then click Next.
4. Click Create a new port type, and select "Standard TCP/IP Port" on the pull
        down menu.
5. Click Next, Enter the server name math.ucdenver.edu then the
port name (like hpbw, ccm, color1, color2 or color3) in the spaces
        provided.
6.	Wait a minute or so until you see: "Additional Port Information Required"
7.	Select the "Custom" Button
8.	Select "Settings..."
9.	Select the "LPR" Button
10.	Enter the correct Queue name (like hpbw, ccm, color1, color2 or color3) in the Queue Name Box
11.	Check the "LPR Bte Counting Enabled" Box
12.	Do Not Check the "SNMP Status Enabled" BOX
13.	Click "OK"
14.	Click "Next"
15.	Click "Finish"

16a.	Select the correct printer type. ie:

ccm HP LaserJet 8100 Series PS
        color1 Xerox 860DP
	hpbw HP LaserJet P4515X
        color2 HP C LaserJet 4500-PS
	win1	HP Laserjet 6MP
	color3 Xerox Phaser 6360DN
        statcolor HP Color Laserjet 4600dn

16b: If you are installing COLOR1, COLOR3 or HPBW you will need to Select "Have Disk" and navigate to where you previously
extracted the print drivers. If you ran the self extracting 5500enw2kpx.exe or 860enw2kps.exe programs they will
normally be in the the root of drive c: in directory /5500w2kpx or /860w2kps respectively.
The 6360WinXP03V_PS_English.exe file extracts to the /xerox directory by default.

17. Click next, Type in a name for the printer (like hpbw, ccm, color1, color2 or color3)
18. Click next, Do not share the printer,
19. Answer the remaining questions and Print a test page if desired

20. If you may want to print double sided on the color or ccm printer you need to set
the print driver to recognize the existence of a duplexing unit. This is done
from control panel - printers - right click the printer - select printer properties
        - select the Device Settings tab - find Duplexing Unit under Installable options
change this to "Installed". Now if you want to print double sided you can by
setting printer preferences when you print or by changing the defaults.
Note 1: You should normally use HPBW for most print jobs it is the fastest one (over 60 pages per minute). Avoid using Color printers unless you really need color as color printing is more expensive.

Note 2: Faculty can also print to the color copy machine. See instructions on the front of the machine for details.
This involves saving the document you want to print as a ps or pdf file type then using a browser on a computer connected to the local math network and following instructions at the web site: http://canoncopy.ucdenver.edu You will need to know your copy machine user ID and password.

Note 3: To print to the Canon Color Copy Machine (Printer Model Canon iR C2620) you will need to install a windows driver that can be downloaded from

http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/office/color_imagerunner_copiers/color_imagerunner_c3200_c3220_c2620/color_imagerunner_c2620_c3220#DriversAndSoftware

The driver needs to be configured With "Department ID Management" enabled. Set this by going to the "Printer Properties" --> "Device Settings" and Check the appropriate entry. Select the "Settings" box to enter your printer user ID and password. This is the same ID and passwoed as used to make color copies.

This printer is also setup to work from the math Department Windows Server.

There currently is no Linux direct print support for this printer.
The web interface http://canoncopy.ucdenver.edu has a "Direct Print" feature that has been reported to not work reliably.
